What to visit?
Four kilometers from the beaches of the Costa Daurada and under the watchful eye of Pic de la Mola, the highest mountain in the Comarca d'Tarragonès, we find this rural town with a significant number of farmhouses. The Village of Montornès was born under the influence of its castle during the Reconquest, of which remains of its walls can still be seen. Strolling through the village, some remarkable buildings from the 18th century and the parish church of Santa Maria, built in 1575, with vaults in the late Gothic style and an artistic bell tower attract attention.
Also worth a visit is the Hermitage of the Virgin of Montornès, built in the 18th century on the remains of an ancient 13th-century sanctuary, which houses a polychrome image of the Virgin dating from the 16th-17th centuries. In this small temple, one of the most anticipated festivities takes place: the living nativity scene, with forty years of tradition, in which the whole town participates. The staging attracts many visitors at Christmas. From the municipality you can visit old farmhouses and numerous stone huts, used in the past by shepherds and farmers, on a pleasant route that covers a large part of the municipality and the Baix Gaià area.
